DTP Vice President Nurettin Demirtas arrested
The DTP Vice President Nurettin Demirtas was arrested two days ago at the Ankara Airport when returning from Europe. Demirtas is accused of having forged documents in order to escape military service in Turkey. It is expected that Demirtas will be transferred to a military service base.
After having participated at the EUTCC conference, EU Turkey and the Kurds, in the European Parliament, Brussels, December 3-4 2007, Demirtas decided to stay in Europe for a few weeks. Before returning to Turkey Demirtas gave an interview to the news agency Firat at the Düsseldorf airport where he strongly condemned the recent air raids against PKK bases carried out by the Turkish air force in the Qandil Mountains of Kurdistan, Iraq. The attacks caused death and huge material losses to civilians in the region. Demirtas stated in the same interview that the Kurdish question can not be solved by military means; it has to be solved politically.
When receiving the news of the arrest of Mr. Demirtas the chair of the EUTCC Kariane Westrheim stated: “This is just another example of how Turkish authorities try to marginalise DTP representatives in Turkey. The ridiculous accusations against Mr. Demirtas can only be read as a pretext for silencing legally elected DTP politicians”.
EUTCC calls on the international community to strongly condemn the detention of the DTP Vice-president Nurettin Demirtas and urges for his immediate and unconditional release.

EUTCC Statement on Turkish Air Strikes
18 December 2007
Press Release: For immediate release
EU Turkey Civic Commission (EUTCC) Strongly Condemns Turkish Air Strikes in Kurdistan, Iraq
EUTCC strongly condemns the air raids carried out two days ago by the Turkish air force in the Qandil Mountains of Kurdistan, Iraq, and urges the Turkish military immediately to stop the air strikes and all military intervention to the area.
The air attacks that were aimed at destroying PKK bases, carried out by reportedly 50 Turkish fighter aircrafts, caused widespread destruction of civilian homes and property and have also resulted in loss of civilian lives.
The air attacks mark an escalation in the intensity of Turkish bombardment of the regions. Simultaneous strikes by the Iranian military in neighbouring areas of the mountainous region are also reported.
When receiving the news of the air strikes the chair of the EUTCC Kariane Westrheim stated: “The border region have once again been targeted. The air strikes carried out by Turkey shows serious disrespect for Iraqi sovereignty and the safety and welfare of civilians in the region. It is not solely the PKK that has been targeted, the killing of civilians and the destruction of a series of small mountain villages - homes and property represent a gross violation of the Geneva conventions”
EUTCC calls on the international community and all good forces to condemn strongly the military intervention in general and the recent air strikes in particular. A continuous escalation of the conflict will cause more suffering to all – including civilians in the region, which so far has been the stable part of Iraq.
